As sarcastic as that sounded, I'm actually excited. Google is now adding chatting features to the GMail interface. We can now see if our buddies who are online and either send an e-mail or send in instant message, whatever you feel like.
Chat logging and everything is integrated with GMail, so you can search for chats just like you do e-mail. It's very feature packed, of course.
Something I'm assuming but not quite understanding is the ability to chat with people using other IM sevices. Gmail tells us they are on some sort of open server-to-server network that allows us to chat with just about anybody. Google says "there's the Google Talk network (http://www.google.com/talk/developer.html#service). That's the millions of people who use the Google Talk IM service, or a service that supports open server-to-server federation to chat with each other instantly. Gmail's now on this network, which means that there are lots more people you can chat with right from your Gmail account." I'm thinking what they mean by this is that that (I'm not sure if these support S2S federation) you can chat with people signed in to MSN and Yahoo as well (their IM clients, not Hotmail/Yahoo mail).
The ability to do that would be quite impressive. Google just keeps impressing me more and more with all of their additions and perks we get for using their free service :p
